Getting your bearings
Pigeon Forge sits in Sevier County, Tennessee, between Sevierville to the north and Gatlinburg to the south. The Parkway (US-441) runs through all three towns and on into Great Smoky Mountains National Park beyond Gatlinburg. Wears Valley, west of Pigeon Forge, is a quieter cabin area with views and easy park access via Townsend.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The park is the most visited national park in the United States and is free to enter, though a parking tag is required to park for more than 15 minutes. Favorites include the Cades Cove loop for wildlife and historic buildings, Newfound Gap Road over the mountains, the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and hikes like Laurel Falls and Alum Cave.
Dollywood and the Parkway
Dollywood theme park and its Splash Country water park are in Pigeon Forge. Along the Parkway you'll find The Island in Pigeon Forge with its big observation wheel, dinner shows, mini-golf and plenty of family attractions.
Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg's walkable downtown is the gateway to the park. Anakeesta, the Gatlinburg SkyLift and SkyBridge, and Ober Mountain add views and activities above town.
Cabin tips
- Many cabins are up steep, winding mountain roads — read the access notes and drive in during daylight on your first trip.
- Winter weather is usually mild in town but higher elevations can see snow and ice.
- Parkway traffic is heavy on peak weekends; back roads and early starts help.
- Never feed or approach black bears, and use bear-proof trash bins if provided.
When to go
Summer and October are the busiest. Winterfest lights run roughly November through February, spring brings wildflowers in the park, and fall color tends to peak in late October to early November at lower elevations.
